Three 6 Mafia
Three 6 Mafia is the first Academy Award-winning rap group in history. Through the years the group formerly known as Triple 6 Mafia, has gone through a number of line-up changes, and now consists of two of the founding members, DJ Paul and Juicy J. In fact, they showcase their dedication to the group in their latest release ‘Last 2 Walk,’ which they produced on their own. In 2006 Three 6 Mafia won an Oscar for their contribution to the ‘Hustle & Flow’ soundtrack entitled ‘It’s Hard Out Here For A Pimp.’ And in 2007 they paired up with MTV for a new reality show called ‘Adventures in Hollywood’ and made appearances at Spring Break ’07 in Cancun.
History
In Memphis of 1991, DJ Paul, (Paul Beauregard), Juicy J, (Jordan Houston), and Ricky Dunigan, also known as Lord Infamous started a hip hop group originally called Triple Six Mafia. As three, they began their own record label called Hypnotize Minds Records which kick started their career, and also helped many other rappers get their start such as N.W.A. The group released over 40 mix tapes by members and non members on Prophet Entertainment before releasing their major label debut album and their first collective album under, Triple Six Mafia, Mystic Stylez. The album released in 1995 didn’t contain any number one hit singles due to the graphic nature of their lyrics, but it did, however, gain a huge cult following in the underground hip hop scene in Memphis. The group has been known for several member and line up changes and has had several disputes with former members and other artists. Due to their graphic lyrics the group has been accused of being Satanic, which has caused a larger cult following and an increase in record sales throughout their music career. The group released up to eight albums between 1991 and 2007. They had also been featured in a number of television series and film soundtracks including Jackass: the Movie and Rocky Balboa.
