Cobra Starship

  • StudentCity.com Appearances:
  • (Panama City Beach '08) mtvU Spring Break Village

The band Cobra Starship was formed in New York City in 2005 and consists of Ivy League members Ryland Blackinton and Alex Suarez, Nate Novarro, and keytarist Victoria Asher all who joined up with founder and group bassist Gabe Saporta . The name Cobra Starship originates from “two jackets that Gabe owned.” Their song “Bring It,” which appears in the movie Snakes on a Plane was ironically written before the film’s release, but gained popularity due to the movie’s success, which is a main reason for them taking part in mtvU Spring Break in PCB with Student City. Cobra Starship rocked out for students during their Spring Break vacation in Panama City.

Career
In July of 2006, Cobra Starship was signed to the imprint of indie label Fueled By Ramen, Decaydance Records. This landed them on tour with label-mates Gym Class Heroes who were also rising in popularity at that time and later went on to tour with Panic at the Disco. Their first album While the City Sleeps, We Rule the Streets was released in October of 2006 and climbed to number one on the U.S. Billboard Top Heatseekers Chart.

The band made further success with songs for TV and Film such as the cover of Lionel Richie’s “Three Times a Lady” appearing in The Girls Next Door, and made the song “Awww Dip,” for the TMNT soundtrack. Another song called “The Church of Hot Addiction” has been used for a T.G.I. Friday’s commercial. More success came from the Honda Civic Tour alongside Fall Out Boy, and other well know artists like Paul Wall and +44.

In October of 2007 Cobra Starship released the single “Guilty Pleasure” from their sophomore album, Viva La Cobra! According to the MySpace bulletin posted by the band, their new single can be heard on Absolutepunk.net on their artist page. The band recently earned their first headlining club tour, which is in the spring of 2008 called “The Really Really Ridiculously Good Looking Tour,” supported by Metro Station, The Cab, and We the Kings.
