Career
The band was formed early in 2001 by friends Joe Trohman and Pete Wentz. These two were had been playing in different bands around the Chicago area, when they both decided it was time to make a change to the music they listened to growing up like Green Day and Descendents. Trohman approached present lead vocalist Patrick Stump in a Borders bookstore after he heard Stump talking about a band Trohman himself was interested in. Stump auditioned for the band as a drummer, but his vocal range landed him as the lead singer. Later two more band members were recruited; a drummer credited as Mike, and T.J. Raccine on guitar. The band remained nameless for the first two shows performed. At the closing to their second show they asked the audience to yell out suggestions, where one fan yelled “Fallout Boy,” which is in reference to a Simpsons cartoon character.
After releasing their first album, Raccine and Logan left the band leaving room for drummer Andy Hurley to take the spot and Stump picked up the other guitar spot. They played a variety of small shows around Illinois, and were later signed by record label Fueled By Ramen, where their first album, Take This to Your Grave was released in May of 2003.
Take This to Your Grave wasn’t much of a success until after the release of their second album From Under the Cork Tree sold real well and achieved Gold status. This album was released on May 3, 2005, which debuted on the Billboard 200 at #9, and sold over 68,000 copies the first week out. Now, in the U.S. alone, the album has sold over 2.5 million copies and achieved double platinum status.
Their first single, "Sugar We're Goin' Down", peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100, #6 on the Pop 100, and #3 on the Modern Rock Charts. The video was #1 on MTV’s TRL until it was retired on August 26, 2005. A new interest and a flow in sales began after the video won the MTV2 Award at the 2005 Video Music Awards and was also nominated for “Best New Artist” at the 2006 Grammy Awards.
After much gained success already, the band released Infinity to High, which received major chart success reaching #1 on the Billboard 200 in February of 2007. Their hit single “This Aint a Scene, It’s an Arms Race”, reached #1 on the Pop 110 and #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band promoted the album at a variety of tours like the Live Earth concerts, Honda Civic Tour, Young Wild Things tour, and also performed at the MTV Video Music Awards on September 9, 2007.
