Lupe Fiasco was born and raised in the West side of Chicago as Wasulu Muhammad Jaco and has made a name for himself as a critically acclaimed MC. This 25-year-old lyricist still believes that talent can prevail in the rap game rather than just making popular dance hits. His skills possess a topical range that adheres more to the underground scene than mainstream, but is still well-known in the rap industry. His popular hits “Kick, Push” and “Superstar” are a couple of reasons why Lupe Fiasco was down in PCB for Spring Break 2008 with Student City.
Career
Fiasco grew up like a normal urban kid, however instead of falling into violence or anything common in those parts, he chose comic books, literature and skateboarding. His rap influences were California artists like Ice Cube and Spice 1, but later turned to the more positive lyrics from rappers Nas and Jay-Z.Fiasco signed in 2004 with Atlantic Records and even launched his own company called 1st & 15th Entertainment, where he started on his debut album, Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor. His first mainstream appearance was hitting up a verse in Kanye West’s single “Touch The Sky,” which transitioned Fiasco into putting out his first solo “Kick, Push,” about his skateboarding days.
After the release of the debut album, Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor, Fiasco achieved great embrace from the media resulting in three Grammy nominations for Best Rap Album, Best Rap Solo Performance and Best Rap Song for “Kick, Push.” Already achieving much fame, Fiasco is an artist that will easily be around making creative and unique tracks for years to come.
