Career
Better known as her wrestling name “Lita,” Amy Christine Dumas was born on April 14, 1975 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Dumas graduated from Lassiter High School six months early, and attended many schools before that in her adolescent years. She majored in education at Georgia State University before dropping out in 1993, feeling like she was back in high school. Dumas eventually wound up in Washington D.C. playing bass guitar in several bands, where she also was a roadie for another band for five years before pursuing a wrestling career. She had also started taking judo and kickboxing classes by this time.
“Lita” was a big name in the WWE from 2000-2006, becoming one of the most popular female wrestling performers in history. She has been in the ECW before being signed with the WWE in 1999. She started off as a pair with Essa Rios, but was known mostly as Team Xtreme with Matt and Jeff Hardy. Lita won the WWE Women’s Championship four times. Her off-screen relationship with Matt Hardy was later used as an angle throughout 2005 and 2006, where she was booed for the first time by fans. Following her retirement in 2006, Lita became the lead singer of The Luchagors, a punk rock band. Their self-titled CD released on September 11, 2007.
Aside from her wrestling and music careers, Amy founded an animal charity called Amy Dumas Operation Rescue and Education (A.D.O.R.E.) in 2003. She appeared in the June 2001 video and DVD release Lita: It Just Feels Right, which showcases several of her matches. Dumas also has an autobiography written about her with Michael Krugman called Lita: A Less Traveled R.O.A.D.- The Reality of Amy Dumas written in 2003. Her book was featured on the best sellers list in the New York Times. She was also featured in the 2001 issue of Rolling Stone Magazine’s Sports Hall of Fame alongside The Hardy Boyz.
